Sharkskin
Hewn from the living soul of soul itself is “Sharkskin”. The lovechild born to Simon Kendall, Doug Elliott, Pat Steward & Craig Northey — three members of the Odds and one ex-member of Doug & the Slugs. Their passion for mid ’60’s instrumental Memphis soul led them to put on the sharkskin suits, haul the Hammond B3 organ up all those flights of stairs, and sweat up those turtlenecks faithfully playing the stinging riffs and signature swells of their favourite numbers by Booker T & the MGs, the Bar-Kays, Mar-Keys, Hayes & Porter and the Meters (plus a host of later funk grooves by James Brown, Sly and the like). Each night of booty-shakin cool brings forth a few new numbers composed on the spot - in the heat of the funk.
The first full length Sharkskin album is now available. Recorded live to stereo at the famous Mushroom Studios by New York’s own Jim Rondinelli (Matthew Sweet, Jayhawks, Wilco, Everclear, the Tragically Hip etc) the album is a true sonic treat. You can try to talk, but you’d better do it while you’re dancing. They don’t sing but they sure do swing.
“…..toothsome tunes that are good as gold……a little Motown , a lot of Stax - the throng danced and yelled for more…..” Steve Burgess, Courier
“…Truly impressive…..compelling instrumental R&B. A good-time feeling permeates the grooves…” Alex Varty, Georgia Straight
4 Stars…”Sharkskin is the soundtrack to another, hipper time… faultless classics by Booker T & the MG’s and The Meters, tastily played originals … Otis Redding would’ve approved.. ” Kim Hughes, Now Magazine, Toronto
